Even if you don’t play games you have probably heard of the FIFA games. Sports games have a huge market and yet companies decide to only stick with the most common ones. The ones which everyone knows, and have plenty of TV and media coverage to boot. But these are far from the most interesting possibilities out there in the world of sport, and here are just some of the ones which I think would work well as an AAA release:
This used to be a thing didn’t it? But no, developer’s have decided to pull away from this sport. I have absolutely no clue why! It can work great as a game, and offers game play faster than what you would find in the likes of FIFA and NBA as such. Need more proof? Just look at GTA’s Tennis mini game. That is great fun! If more time and money was put in to an experience like that, we could have something awesome on our hands.
Fighting games are everywhere, however here are little martial arts games around anywhere! I know I said Taekwondo but it could be one of the many other similar martial arts, or even a collection of them. As an individual sport it would allow players to focus more on their own selves, and customize and develop as a single person. This would also be an amazing local multi-player experience, and one I would love to see on my console.
Uniqueness is key in games, and Lacrosse will fit the bill perfectly. The sport will add difference and could boast some pretty amazing game play and being a contact sport; could be very entertaining. I would recommend looking up a Lacrosse match and see what I mean. The only problem I can think of is the fact that the ball may be quite hard to see.
A sport with a lot of variety and a lot of creative freedom to the player. With many events to choose from and a whole load of different ways to go about each one, a gymnastics game could hold large amounts of customization to an abundance in game-play variety.
I may be a bit biased here as it is my preferred sport, but Fencing has incredible potential. At it’s core, Fencing is duelling, and dueling is something games can do very, very well. The rise of mask painting (look it up) would lead to a nice portion of customization, as well as small bits of personalisation on the kit itself. The sport also has 3 different weapon types: Foil, Epee and Sabre. Giving players a choice between lots of strategy (Epee) or straight out charging in and whacking your opponent.(Sabre). And yes the rules can be complex, they are nothing a tutorial couldn’t solve.

Don’t forget the underscore. No, really, don’t.
