The console versions of hit game Minecraft (so that include; PlayStation 3, PS4, Vita, Wii U, Xbox 360 and Xbox One), will be getting a new – and free – mini-game mode!
Sometime in June (definitive release date is TBA), the ‘Battle’ mini-game will launch, which allows up to 8 players (up to 4 in split-screen), to battle competitively in arenas with procedurally-generated chests full of loot and weaponry. So like a ready-made Hunger Games!
To help to mode be profitable, and help further monetise from the game, the Battle mode will be supported with DLC map packs priced at $2.99 (UK cost TBA).
Microsoft acknowledged in an official blog post that “coming up with improvised rules and new ways to play with friends is already a popular activity among Minecraft: Console Edition players,” but it also follows up saying that the new Battle mini-game will “help quickly and easily jump into competitions with tailor-made rulesets, so you can have fun straight away without having to fuss around with manual count-downs, laboriously prep loot chests or keep score.” Seems fair, I’ve always wanted to do a Hunger-Games style Minecraft match with friends, but just never got around to making a [good] arena to play in!
