Netflix, the global leader in movie and television streaming has released fast.com, a simple speed test that measures your download speed on any device, anywhere.
Why do I need it?
The reason why Netflix launched this quick and easy website is so any user (you don’t have to be a Netflix subscriber) can tell exactly how much download speed they are getting from their internet service provider. Many times, we pay for high-speed internet in our homes and most of the time we get speeds barely half of what we pay for especially over wifi. This quick and easy website can help you decide on if you are getting the right amount of speed from your provider as well as create a baseline for placement of your Netflix and other WiFi equipment. Wondering if your Roku box will work in a specific area? Just load this website on your phone (the website is very light weight) and put it in the area and run three tests, the average internet speed between these numbers is what you can expect when your Roku is placed in that area.
How do I use it?
Using the website is as simple as can be, just go to fast.com and the website will automatically detect the best server to connect and download packets from. Then, the website wills how you in real time its current download speed. After a few seconds, they will give you a final result. If you find your download speed is not what you expected especially over ethernet it is good practice to unplug your router for about a minute and try again. If this doesn’t work it just might be time to talk to your internet service provider.
How accurate is it?
In my experience, the website is very accurate. While the website is by no means a gamer’s website as it does not track ping, upload speed or latency (only download speed), it is a quick and dirty way of telling you exactly how accurate your internet really is at that time. I am currently paying for 75 mbps and the website was right on over 3 tests within a few megabits. While Fast is powered by the same provider, this to me is a bit more accurate than the Ookla speed test, but then again Ookla is more resource heavy and gives you more details about your internet connection.
It is always advised that you have over 10mbps to stream HD movies from Netflix, and this website is the best way to tell if you have fast enough internet. While this isn’t quite a professional internet measurement tool, it is a quick and easy well of telling you how fast your download speed on any internet capable device anywhere in the world.
