With rumours of new consoles on the horizon due to be announced at E3 this year, one would ask themselves, why? With only three years since the current generation of consoles (PS4 and Xbox One). Just a quick note – I won’t be mentioning the Wii U, because of the fact it’s dead so it needs to be replaced.
So let’s look at the PlayStation 4 and whether it needs to be replaced with a newer model. Simply put I would have to somewhat agree. While the PS4 is a fairly powerful machine, with relative ease its generally outputting 1080p 30fps if not higher, (and don’t come at me with “60fps or die”, I don’t care) but will it be like that for long? Consoles usually come out with bleeding edge technology, above and beyond that of PC’s for at least a few years but this gen the consoles came out at the level of mid range PC’s and it’s slowly dropping. NVIDIA is launching new graphics cards soon as is AMD so it won’t be long before the current consoles will be barely competing against the PC in terms of pure power. And therefore they fall behind the times even further. Making developing games harder and that’s not good.
The Xbox One launched behind the PS4 in performance with most games running about 900p 30fps not a massive difference but for a new generation machine it just isn’t good enough. Xbox owners had the news with each AAA game that the performance is just that bit worse than PS4, not to mention the prior plans for 24 hour check-ins and always on spying Kinect oooohhh spooky Kinect. It was all bad press for the Xbox One and frankly the lower performance didn’t give it much of an edge in the market. So of the two consoles the Xbox really does need a do over. If not a major one, just something to tip it over the performance spectrum to be a little better than the PS4. And for fuck sake make it smaller. The size of the Xbox One is madness. I got rid of mine because of its size.
However can we wait 2 more years and call this gen finished in 2018? Well, I think so yeah. Consoles updating every half gen like mobile phones is just mad, and frankly if it goes this way I might just go with PC gaming and leave it at that.
But what do you Panda’s think? If there was an updated fleet of consoles would you purchase one? If you haven’t purchased either yet would you go for the cheaper weaker version or splash out on the better performance console?
