After spending a hamster lifetime in Steam Early Access, Starbound has an official launch date, July 22.
The 2D extraterrestrial sandbox side-scrolling adventure first went up for pre-order just over three years ago in December 2013, after spending two previous years in development. Since then, a whole host of new features have been added, including mod support. And it looks like they won’t be stopping anytime soon.
In a blog post on the official Starbound website they said, “After ~5 years, the game we set out to make finally exists, and to say that it all feels a bit surreal would be a massive understatement! While Starbound will be finished in two weeks, this isn’t the end. We will continue to update and support Starbound for as long as we can. We’ve got loads of cool ideas we couldn’t fit into 1.0 but hope to put into future updates.”
The game starts off with the player lost in space on a damaged ship. Once you’ve spent too long a time customising your character off the seven races you can choose from, the only choice is for you to travel to the planets below to gather resources, slowly but surely rebuilding your spaceship with the option of working together with other players using drop in/out co-op play.
The alien universe is yours to explore, and you can play however you want. Whether you want to set up on a planet and build a life down there, go on heroic journeys of justice to avenge your destroyed home, or farm.
The vast range of gameplay options and in-depth updates makes the long wait fans have had to endure, just a bit easier to bear.
Starbound is available to play on PC, Mac and Linux. An Xbox One Game Preview is also in the works.
