Gabe Newell is no God. Praise him as you will the company PC gamers love so much is a shambles. Steam is a mess of a store with rubbish games piling in left and right and Valve are promising games for 10 years and answering no questions about the current state or progress of development. All press and consumers know is a whole pile of nothing and it’s a shambles.
PC gamers often mention Steam as a massive reason to be a PC player and while Steam is a decent store front it has major issues from the worst of Greenlight memes under the guise of being a game (some of which have actually caused computer viruses) to Early Access projects that developers abandon after deciding they just can’t be bothered anymore or they’ve made enough money, to the countless games that get thrown up as renamed clones of a popular one.
Buying pre made asset packs from the Unity3D store is a past time for these, ahem, developers. Who will purchase whole maps intended to be filled with your own artwork and ideas are instead just purchased and slapped up on Greenlight knowing that enough people will up vote it ironically. A whole library of this nonsense is available c/o Jim Sterling’s YouTube channel. However what they don’t seem to realise as they chuckle and up vote it is they are playing a part in filling the store with dregs and dregs of pure unfiltered and foul smelling shit. No one wants these games, really. Yes there are a certain amount of people who will buy them if they go on sale for a couple of cents but the mass market don’t want another blocky “FPS with survival elements”. They don’t want another “survival-horror” with broken flash light mechanics what most people want is a good game. Not a broken mess with buggy frame rates and tearing textures they want a half decent game.
And I know, these people are indie developers put your damn pitchfork damn for Christ sake. But that doesn’t matter, because it’s dragging down the good indie developers. Obviously we should NEVER paint everyone with the same brush, but if enough bad eggs get in the basket you might not know which ones are good and throw the whole lot out. (I’m using metaphors did you catch that? Cool, huh?). If there’s enough Digital Homocide’s or Kobra Studios laying their shit eggs everyone, we might stop trusting actual good indie devs, your say Mike Bithell’s or Hello Games.
And really that’s a damn shame. If you walked into your local game store and instead of neatly packed shelves there were just games thrown all over the place would you be happy with that? Of course not, if you had to crawl through endless amounts of pure shit to find the good games you’d be livid.
That’s what Steam is becoming, because THERE IS NO QUALITY CONTROL. Valve basically left the flood gates open fell asleep and now there’s water all over your new Lino. Are you gonna take that? That was expensive Lino. Steam has never been praised for good customer service or quality control but it’s not good enough. If your local games store called you a fucker every time you visited would you put up with that? Valve are laughing all the way to the bank while you swim through shit to get a decent game, “Oh, it’s an indie game you want? How about eh, The Slaughtering Grounds? No? Eh, let’s see what about this generic survival horror game that runs at 20fps you PC guys love that right?”
Sure enough Steam isn’t all terrible, there’s fantastic sales all the time and it’s amazingly easy to play your games, until it isn’t. You have issues with VAC bans, VAC in case you didn’t know is Valves Anti Cheat system, which makes up its own rules and is not reversible. It also has more times than forgivable banned players unfairly. Super Bunny Hop recalled a time while playing Dark Souls an offending player invaded a game and because that player was cheating, George was left with a VAC ban. Which is still there. This is the problem with Steam’s customer service, or eh, lack thereof.
So, while you’re browsing your favourite store front and praising “Lord Gaben” before you go to bed at night, just remember you deserve and should demand better. If you wouldn’t accept it from any other store don’t accept it from steam. And where the fuck is Half Life 3 Newell 10 years. 10 years.
